National Events and the Asian Cadet Circuit

Singapore Youth Olympic Festival

The SYOF fencing event was held at the end of June, coinciding with the nation-wide Youth Olympic Festival. It was a well-supported event, attracting significant media attention as well. Our young fencers were certainly not overawed by the event, with Heidi Loo powering through to win the Gold in the U-16 event. Calista Chong and Madeleine Fung also finished with individual Bronzes, to round up an Asgard domination of the podium. Well done!

GNC Cadet Open

The local competition season continued with the GNC Cadet Open held slightly more than a month later, in the first week of August. This time, another two of our fencers, Megan Au and Alexis Loh, rose to the occasion to finish with a Bronze medal each in the individual event. During the team event the following day, the Asgard team of Alexis, Heidi, Calista and Madeleine did well to overcome the Singapore Sports School team in the final to finish with another team Gold. The Cadet team has won all three local team events this year. Well done!

National Cadet and Junior Championships

The last local Cadet championships of the season took place just a few weeks later, at the end of August. Our Asgard girls finished in style, sweeping the podium with Megan winning Gold, Heidi winning Silver, and Calista finishing with Bronze. Incredible!

However our fine run unfortunately could not extend to the Junior event, as our top two fencers Nicole and Joyce had to meet in the round of 16. Joyce went through and finished with a well-earned Silver. Our SEA Games Champion Lau Ywen did not participate, as she was still resting from the exertions at the SEA Games.

National Senior Championships

Our top fencers took part the the National Senior Championships at the beginning of August, and swept both the Men's and Women's events, with Clive Leu winning the individual Men's Sabre and Ywen winning the Women's Sabre. Joyce Ng also did well to finish with an individual Bronze and the Women's Sabre. Well done to all!

Asian Cadet Circuit – Wakayama and Bangkok

This season marked the inauguration of the Asian Cadet Circuit – a welcome addition to our calendar allowing our young fencers to challenge top Cadets from our region. Our Asgard team participated in both the Wakayama and Bangkok legs of this circuit, and managed to secure a few top 16 positions – good results for first year Cadets! They will certainly be back next year to push themselves further!
