Young Asgardians show great promise!

With our top fencers busy competing in the Asian and World Championships, our young fencers have also begun their journey to the top, with successes at various age group and Minime events this year. We are certainly proud of their achievements, and more importantly the fight and determination that they have demonstrated in each tournament. Bravo young Asgardians!

Modern Fencing Minime

The year began with the Modern Fencing Minime held in February at the Grand Ballroom of Temasek Club. Fencers from all-around Asia flew in to take part in the tournament! The competition was made up of a U10 mixed event, as well as U12 and U14 events for both boys and girls.

The tournament ended with our fencers clinching four Golds and a Silver, with Julius snagging the Gold in the U10 event, Josiah and Elysha also finishing with Golds in the U12 Boys and Girls category respectively. Additionally, Raymos picked up the Gold in the U14 Boys event, and Rebekah with a Silver in the U14 Girls event.

The U12 Boys category saw three top 16 finishes by Alex, Julius, and Rayden. Emmanuel also managed a top 16 finish in the U14 Boys category, with Aidan and Bryan finishing in 5th and 6th position respectively. Aidan was unfortunate to meet Raymos, the eventual winner, in the quarter-finals, with a nail-biting score of 13-15. Also, a commendable 5th place finish by our U12 champion, Elysha, in the U14 Girls event, suffering a defeat of 11-15 to Thailand. A great performance by all fencers!

Singapore U10 and U12 Championships

The month of March saw the Singapore National U10 and U12s take place at the OCBC Arena over the weekend, bringing in fencers from across South-East Asia to compete in the U10 and U12 categories.

We finished with a Gold and two Bronzes, with Elysha picking up a Gold and Abigail with a Bronze in the U12 Girls event, and another Bronze by Julius in the U10 Boys event. Good job to Gabriel who finished in the round of 16 as well!

NIST Young Falcons Invitational

The Young Falcons Invitational was held in Thailand in May, comprising of both individual and team events for fencers ranging from ages 10 to 20. In total, 15 fencers represented Asgard in U10, U12, U14, U17, and U20 categories, bringing home multiple medals of all colours!

Julius and Eliana clinched our first two bronzes in the U10 Boys and Girls event, well done to them as well as Matthew with a Top 32 finish, and Gabriel who participated. The U12 events followed shortly after, and our boys team consisting of Julius, Josiah, and Augustine, earned another Bronze in the team event after a well-fought match of 37-45 in the semi-finals! Congratulations to Julius on his double bronze! The U12 individual event also saw Augustine and Eysha finish in the round of 8, along with Josiah, Alex, and Julius with a Top 32 finish.

The U14 Girls individual event saw Rebekah shine with her Gold medal after advancing through the competition to a nail-biting final of 15-13. Kirsten and Elysha also did well, both finishing in the round of 16. Though the U14 Boys individual event ended without a medal, our Boys team composing of Bryan, Raymos, Aidan, and Emmanuel braved their way through to the finals in the team event, beating their opponents with a close score of 45-43 to win the Gold medal!

With the U17 events underway, Kirsten managed to clinch a bronze in the Girls category! Lucie and Rebekah both finished in the round of 16 in the same event, while Raymos and Bryan finished in the rounds of 32 and 64 respectively. Lastly, our only U20 fencer, Lucie, also did well in her event with a Top 16 finish!

This tournament was a first to many of our young fencers, and we are so proud of them for achieving their best! Well done to all Asgardians!

Singapore Youth Olympic Festival U-14

Following the Senior World Championships we had the Singapore Youth Olympic festival from 27th to 29th July. The U-14 Women’s and Men’s sabre events were held on Friday and Saturday, and Rebekah added another Gold to her impressive season with a victory in the final over the Singapore Sports School. Kirsten also did well to finish with an individual Bronze and she was unfortunate to meet with Rebekah in the semifinal. In addition Kymberly had made her first ever competitive appearance, and we are pleased with the effort and fight she demonstrated today!

In the Boy’s event Raymos was unfortunate to meet teammate Bryan in the top 16, and finished 9th. Aidan and Emmanuel also fought hard and finished in the top 16. We look forward to the coming season where they will get another chance to fence for higher positions. Well done to all who fenced!
