Asgard Fencing dominates National Trials
The National Trials for the Cadet (U17), Junior (U20) and Senior (Open) Age Groups were conducted over the October weekends. The National Trials are an essential component of qualifying for the National Team and with the excellent results our fencers are currently in pole position in the selection for next year’s Asian and World Championships.
In the Cadet and Junior Trials, Nicole Wee did well to finish with Silver in the Cadet Category, losing narrowly 13-15 in the final. Joyce Ng finished as Champion in the Junior Category, winning 15-13 against Candice Lee. Our newer fencers Rosamond Ng and Lim Xinyi fought hard but were unlucky to meet both Nicole and Joyce in the first round. It is heartening that we managed to win these events even in the absence of our top fencer Lau Ywen who had been granted an exemption from these trials! Congratulations to all!
The Cadet and Junior Trials were followed two weeks later by the National Senior Trials. Asgard swept the field with Clive Leu finishing as Champion of the Men’s event and Lau Ywen and Ann Lee finishing as Champion and Silver medallist respectively in the Women’s event. Nicole and Joyce also did well to finish in the top 8 positions.
Finally, our only Foil fencer, Lau Ysien, did a fantastic job in finishing Silver at the National Junior Trials and Bronze at the Senior Trials. Ysien had been unable to train much due to external commitments so this was a great result from her!
