Early Successes: Pre-season Ranking Events

Over the past couple of weeks, our fencers have participated in three consecutive weeks of competitions in Singapore and Hong Kong in order to accumulate national ranking points. Some of our younger fencers are also entering their first Cadet season, and they look set to continue our winning legacy as our dominant Cadets graduate into the Junior category.

National Junior and Cadet Championships

We had the first series of Junior and Cadet Championships in late May and early June, and we came back with four individual bronzes in the individual women’s sabre events, with Nicole Wee and Joyce Ng winning bronze in the Junior category, while Heidi and Calista won their first national Cadet medals in their first Cadet year. Well done!

In the Junior team event, our top seeded team was unfortunately upset in the finals by a determined opponent. It was however a good wake-up call and a lesson against complacency. In the Cadet team event our team consisting of Heidi, Calista, Maddy and Alexis pulled off a hard fought victory in the final, emerging as Team Champions in their first ever Cadet team championships. Well done!

Hong Kong U20/U17 Championships

Between the Junior and Cadet Championships our fencers had to make a brief trip to Hong Kong to participate in the Hong Kong U20 Championships. Joyce did us proud by finishing with an individual Silver – the best result from the Singapore contingent. Nicole fenced well but was unfortunate to meet the defending Asian Champion in the quarterfinal, where she put up a good fight in a 13-15 defeat. Alexis and Megan performed well to finish also in the top 8, while Xinyi, Heidi and Calista gained invaluable experience from this event, even though they finished early.
