Ywen at the World Championships in Tashkent

The World Cadet and Junior Championships were held in Tashkent from 1 – 9 April 2015. Lau Ywen from Asgard took part in both the Cadet (U17) and the Junior (U20) Women’s Sabre events, finishing as the best Singaporean performer in both events.

In the Cadet event, Ywen defeated Tonpan Pokeaw from Thailand 15-6 before falling to 6th seed Beatric Dalla Vecchia from Italy 10-15. She finished a credible 25th out of 58 fencers. The Junior event was a much tougher one, and Ywen lost narrowly to Eloisa Passaro from Italy 13-15 in the round of 64, finishing 47th out of 78 fencers. With two more years remaining in the Cadet category and 5 more years as a Junior, we can expect even better results from Ywen in the years to come!

This edition of the World Championships also saw incredible results from Jet Ng (ZFF) and Lam Jing Siang (ABF) in the Men’s Foil and Men’s Sabre events respectively. Both fencers did exceedingly well to finish in the top 8, and were only the second and third fencers in the history of Singapore fencing to do so. Congratulations to the boys and their coaches!
