Asgardian Monthly - Our Young Stars take charge
While our top athletes have been busy preparing for the Asian and World Championships, our young ones have also had an action-filled few weeks, as they took part in the Thailand Minimes, Novices Championships and National U10/U12 Championships. It was no surprise that they brought home a good haul of medals – do read below for the details!
The Thailand Minime circuit was held on the first weekend of February, and we had a sizeable contingent of young boys and girls attending, some of them on their first ever overseas tournament. The tournament comprised U10, U12, U14 as well as U17 categories. Heidi was the big winner this weekend, finishing with Bronze in the U17 category and Silver for U14! Wong Yu Qi also did us proud in being crowned Champion of the U12 category. Calista and Rebekah did well with Bronzes in the U14 and U12 categories respectively, while Augustine came home with a Silver in the U10 – an improvement over his Bronze the previous year. Well done!
The Novices Championship is a unique event in Singapore – a tournament only for fencers with fewer than three years of competitive experience. Heidi, Maddy and Calista represented Asgard at this event, coming up against a large pool of much older competitors. The day did not begin well as all three girls were placed in the same path of the direct elimination. Heidi had to overcome her teammates Calista and Maddy in the round of 16 and quarterfinal respectively, but her teammates cheered her through to the finals where she won convincingly and emerged as the Novices Champion!
The girls competed in the Team Event just two days later, and the girls were in great spirits and great form, blitzing their opponents and finishing the final with a lopsided 45-19 scoreline. Congratulations to Heidi, Maddy and Calista for bringing back the double gold!
Singapore U10/U12 Championships
The March school holidays began with the national U10 and U12 championships held over the weekend at the Singapore Sports School. The tournament was not limited to Singaporeans, with many fencers from Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines also participating.
We finished with a total of two Silvers and two Bronzes, with Rebekah and Bryan picking up Silver in the U12 Girls and Boys events respectively, while Charis and Rayden finished with Bronzes in the U12 Girls and U10 Boys events. Well done to all, especially to Charis and Rayden who won their first ever individual medals!
