Fencers win historic silver at Asian Cadet Championships!
The Asian Cadet and Junior Championships were held in Abu Dhabi from 1 - 9 March 2015. Our fencers Lau Ywen and Joyce Ng were selected to represent Singapore in both the Cadet (U-17) and the Junior (U-20) events.
In the Cadet event, Ywen suffered an unfortunate 12-15 defeat in the Quarterfinals to eventual champion Jumi Wakita from Japan. Joyce lost in the round of 16 to another Japanese fencer Ayaka Mukae. However the girls fenced well in the team event, beating a strong Kazakhstan team 45-40 in the semifinals before going down to Japan in the final. It was the first time ever that a Singapore sabre team had made it to the finals of this event and we are exceedingly proud of our girls for achieving this milestone!
In the Junior event, Ywen lost another close bout 13-15 to eventual silver medalist Sarybay Aigerim from Kazakhstan. Joyce bowed out in the round of 16 to Bui Thi Thu Ha from Vietnam. It was a good learning experience fencing against the older girls in the Junior event and our girls will surely learn and improve from this!
