Countdown to the SEA Games!

The South East Asian (SEA) Games are just around the corner, and the whole of Singapore is buzzing with anticipation – it is the first SEA Games hosted by Singapore in over twenty years! Every sport has been gearing up and training hard to ensure a good showing in front of the home crowd – and fencing is no exception.

The Singapore Fencing team is aiming to out-do the achievements of previous SEA Games outings, with our best result being the 2007 SEA Games with one gold, two silvers and three bronzes. The Men’s and Women’s Sabre teams for the SEA Games are comprised of a number of Asgard members, with David Chan and Clive Leu in the Men’s Team, and Ann Lee, Lau Ywen and Sharmaine Cheung in the Women’s Team.

The Sabre team has been preparing intensely for the competition to be held from 3-7 June, and our preparations included a month-long overseas stint in three different countries and two continents!

We kicked off our preparations in the middle of April with a training stint in Budapest, followed by a preparatory FIE Satellite event held in London. Ann also did well in that event, finishing with a Bronze medal! After London, the team continued to Beijing, where the girls participated in the Beijing World Cup, a high level international event which contributes to world ranking points. We stayed on in Beijing for two weeks of intensive training before returning in the middle of May to rest and prepare for the SEA Games.

The SEA Games fencing events are now just two days away, and the team is ready and raring to go. We hope to do the country proud and we are counting for your support – not just for Asgard, but for Team Singapore!
